Neonatal Resuscitation

The neonatal resuscitation is the way to revive and stimulate newborn babies so that they will able to breathe again. Just as we need proper breathing in order to live, babies also need proper breathing. However if there is something wrong in the airway, breathing or circulation there will be a problem and that’s when resuscitation comes in.

There are newborn infants who need neonatal resuscitation in order to make their heart rates become normal. It is said that there are about 10 percent or less of infants who have this case. And there is a 1 percent who needs extensive measures for resuscitation. It is therefore recommended that a medical specialist who knows resuscitation procedures to be present when there is birthing.

Here are some factors that would determine if the infant will not need neonatal resuscitation. The first factor is if the baby already reached its full term. The next one is if there is no indication of infection in the amniotic fluid and there should be meconium present as well. The third one is that the baby is able to breathe on his own. A baby crying is actually a sign that his breathing is fine. Lastly the muscle tone has to be observed and they should be looking good. If any of these factors are not present then it is highly possible that the baby will need neonatal resuscitation. Those who are born prematurely have a higher risk of needing help with their proper breathing. It could be due to inhaling meconium, not enough placenta, a blockage of some sort in the umbilical cord.

Since the neonatal infants have smaller bodies the equipments used for neonatal resuscitation are different also from the adults. There has to be a neonatal bag in addition to the other requirements.
